Steps to Choose your Career Pathway

There are three main steps to choose your career pathway. First is to discover yourself, then decide and finally enact. When you make efforts and try to reach your goal, you will always succeed; it is only the matter of time. When we work what we like, what we are good at and help society by our work then we express ourselves and succeed the most.

DISCOVER YOURSELF

Analyse your likes and dislikes, values, personality, abilities, strengths and what alternatives are open to you.
Volunteering, joining different societies, groups and jobs can help you to discover your interests.

Question yourself: you are the only one who knows what is the best for you and what do you really want. Therefore, even consultants, tests and other people are not as good advises as yourself.
Ask yourself a question: “What would I love doing?”, “What would I pay for that I could do?” As Alan Watts suggests, ask: “What would I do if money was not an object?”
This might give you answers about the work you would love to do. When you do some activity that you love doing it and do not even notice the time passing, it is right activity. When you wake up and you are happy to think about your work, you are looking forward to doing it, then it is a right work.

Four Main occupation types:
Think and choose the occupation type that suits you better.

Education, medicine type – provide education and spiritual leadership, priests, teachers, doctors and intellectuals.
They work with people in education, care or medical area, engage in thinking, speaking, writing, spirituality such as preaching or meditation, etc.

Management, protection type – merchants, administrative officials, governors, politicians, police, army, managers and protectors of society.
They are good in managing a group, governing, explaining everything, organising and leading. They know what others can do well, allocate them right duties. They do not have a fear and protect the weaker ones. Their words are powerful, not violent.

Production, business type – production, business, sales people, merchants and farmers.
They maintain the prosperity, wealth, production of food, clothes and other things in society. They are good in exchanging things, business, sales, getting the profit. They work with animals, material objects in agriculture and money in trade, services.

Working, artists type – artists, working people who accept another’s employment, engage in physical work. They work in constructing, creating and fixing something. They work with material objects (production, arts). They fulfil duties, listen to instructions, like less responsibility and have specific directions what and how to do. Also they can do everything individually.

DECIDE

Seek for information about prospective careers from different sources, what is happening in the general work environment, what skills do you need for different work areas.

Analyse other influences: other factors that may impact your decision e.g., family members etc.
Analyse your childhood. What did you used to do naturally when you were a kid?
What other people think that you would be good at working?

Assess information and make a decision.

ENACT

Action Plan, GROW model: develop an action plan to reach the goal and make the first step towards that.

You can use GROW model:

G – Goals: establish your goal. Does this goal fit with her overall career objectives?

R – Reality: examine the current reality. What is happening now (what, who, when, and how often)? Have you already taken any steps towards your goal? Does this goal conflict with any other goals or objectives?

O – Options/Obstacles: explore the options. What else could you do?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?
What factors or considerations will you use to weigh the options?
What do you need to stop doing in order to achieve this goal?
What obstacles stand in your way?

W – Way/Will. What will you do now and when? What else will you do?
What could stop you moving forward? How will you overcome this?
How can you keep yourself motivated?
When do you need to review progress? Daily, weekly, monthly?

Progress: In the beginning it might take time for you to become very good in your field, but if you love doing it and make efforts; it is just a matter of time when you become successful and very good in what are you doing. So keep making efforts and believing in that.

Share: When you just start doing something that you love, share it with other people. Help them, give them your knowledge or service for free, donation or smaller price. They will share with others and the information about your work will be spread out.
The work you do should benefit and serve society in a good way, not be harmful.

You might have many challenges in the beginning to choose and reach your career pathway. You might be afraid of other’s opinion, not be confident or you might think it is too late to change something. You might have many thoughts and challenges, however do not focus on them and keep moving towards your goal. Make all your efforts, question yourself, analyse, discover your career pathway and keep reaching it.

I wish You health and happiness,
